Section I: Key Takeaways
Personal Statements Matter

“When one has weighed the sun in a balance, and measured the steps of the moon, and mapped out the seven heavens star by star, there still remains oneself.”
Oscar Wilde
The personal statement is a chance for applicants to showcase their personalities and highlight their accomplishments. Students can thus spend time crafting a well-written and engaging college admissions/college app essay.
Here, applicants are writers who generate a window into their life and grant their readers access to that “window.” Beware of trite, formulaic “hooks” and other writing gimmicks that can take away from an otherwise well-written meditation on one’s lived experience as a human being.

Engaging a reader's shared human experience is powerful: it creates an opportunity for the submitter's application to reach its audience in a special and intimate way.
A strong personal statement can make students more competitive. However, writing the “college essay” can sometimes be one of the most difficult parts of the college apps or college admissions process.
